Welcome to the Griffin Inn

What The Griffin is all about........!

An Inn, in the true sense of the word, must always provide a haven of rest for the weary traveller. At The Griffin we have thirteen bedrooms offering just that; all individually designed, most with 4-posters, as befits the age of the building. The recently acquired Victorian Griffin House next door has been decorated in fin de siecle style.

When the Pullan family bought The Griffin nearly 30 years ago, there was no such word (or place) as a "Gastropub" and public houses - as they were then called - were still very much a male-dominated domain. We remember there was even a phrase bandied about by our then suppliers, "Wet and Dry trade" - whatever that meant!

Coming down from London, we missed the opportunity of casual eating; it was Gravetye Manor or "Scampi-in-a-basket" and nothing in between. There was obviously a huge gap in the market for offering some form of imaginative, middle-priced dining. After all , most of us had enjoyed French and Italian holidays where families and children were welcomed with open arms. We set about trying to change this attitude by making The Griffin a welcoming, friendly destination for men, women and children with the accent on good food and wine.

And, of course, others followed suit and now "Gastropubs" (an essentially urban phenomenon) are turned upside-down and inside-out with sanded floors, stripped pine and distressed paintwork. We have tried to avoid this route and have kept The Griffin, as much as possible, close to its original concept ie an inn for hungry travellers or, in today's terms, as a haven for over-stressed mums and dads where they can meet and happily let their kids run riot in the garden. And gardeners, golfers, and just about anyone who walks into the Bar with muddy boots

From this you can rightly assume we are not politically correct; we welcome the Hunt, who meet in our car park, shooters and poachers who provide us with game and likewise fishermen from the local river.

Which brings us to our last and most important subject: food; please check our Food and Wine Section and come and see for yourselves !

On a warm summer's evening, you can sit out in our beautiful garden looking towards the Sussex Downs, watching the sun go down, with a chilled glass of rose in your hand and think you've died and gone to heaven! Need we say more?
